Why is oneTRANSPORT needed?

oneTRANSPORT began as a feasibility study undertaken by a consortium spanning the Transport (Arup, WorldSensing, Traak) and Telecom Industries (InterDigital Europe) and a Local Transport Authority (Buckinghamshire County Council). It was conceived in response to the ‘Integrated Transport’ initiative launched by Innovate UK (the Technology Strategy Board).

A detailed study explored the integrated transport challenge from an Internet-of-Things (IoT) perspective, recognising that the new oneM2M standard has been designed exactly for this purpose – not just for transport, but also with applicability to energy, health and smart cities.

oneM2M began its life in ETSI, the European Telecoms Standards Institute, in 2010 with the goal of providing a service enablement solution for machine-to-machine, M2M, communications. It grew beyond simply wireless communications, and in 2012 ETSI’s counterparts in America and Asia – the same players who created 3GPP (which standardised 3G and 4G mobile) – joined with ETSI to take the standard global. August 2014 saw its first formal publication. As with other such standards, many major telecom and IT companies are developing products to the standard.
